#MenToo Does Not Undermine #MeToo, It's About Equality for All

#MenToo Does Not Undermine #MeToo, It's About Equality for All

"I have been an advocate of both - #MeToo and #MenToo. The #MenToo movement is about justice and equality. In fact, it complements #MeToo. Take my case, for example," said Karan Oberoi who revealed that his traumatic experience did more damage to his mental health than his career. Sexual assault is a heinous crime and when one is falsely accused it should be taken seriously since there are many men who have been wrongly accused and are still behind bars.

Not all women are victims and not all men are rapists.

The truth is that Indian laws on rape only defend women and do not take a stand against men who are actually innocent and have been falsely accused by women. Hence, it is high time India law digs deeper and declares such men innocent. "Not all women are victims and not all men are rapists." Oberoi also added that "MenToo is the need of the hour. A society thrives when everybody lives in peace and harmony. #MenToo stands for the fact that if you file a false case, you can get into trouble because every person who gets away with leveling false charges will encourage others to follow suit." #MeToo is also about equality, however, some have turned it into a male-bashing stance to respond to women being victimized by patriarchy for generations. But, implicating innocent men is not the answer since this will in turn severely undermine the #MeToo movement and those who stand by it.

Rape laws should not support disgruntled women

#MeToo was largely seen as a campaign that only focused on women and banished men, however as Pooja Bedi said, 'it will only give back the weight and integrity to the #MeToo movement because misuse of a movement takes away from its purpose and credibility.' Interestingly, men are named and shamed on social media, however, women are not subject to it when they find themselves on the wrong side of the law. Rape laws should not support disgruntled women who choose to use it when they don't get what they want from men. Men and women need to work together to support both #MeToo as well as #MenToo movements because as soon as you segregate men and women and decide to bash each other for gratification, both come crumbling down. Therefore, there is a real need for gender equality across the board in terms of the fight against sexual harassment and false accusations.
