The appeal of being one's own boss and working remotely is something that almost all professionals dream of, regardless of their gender and just because remote work presents a host of opportunities for both men and women all over the world, the playing field is definitely not level. A study early this year revealed that there is a gap of 25 percent or more which favors men more than women and this contributes towards a high gender wage gap in the sphere of remote work.
Men do not need face time to get ahead
The study interestingly revealed that high performing remote-workers actually earn more than people who have never worked remotely before. says Sophia Bernazzai, content marketing manager for Owl Labs said, "Our theory for the pay disparity is that face time in the office impacts women’s career progression and salary growth more than it does men. That traditional ‘time in the office, time spent at your seat’ as a representation of the work and the quality of the work you’re completing. We think that’s a gender gap that is affecting women more so than men." Men who work remotely are more likely to earn 48 percent more than men who have never worked remotely before, on the other hand, women remote workers earn about 53 percent more than women who have never done remote work. Bernazzani added, "We see time and time again that working remotely doesn’t mean that you earn less money; it does mean that men earn more than women."
There's also the confidence gap among men and women
In terms of individual workers, men win as the highest earners and face time seems to be an important factor in this. While face time was not as crucial for men because they did not worry about it as much as women, women believed that face time was needed in order to get ahead. This could be due to the fact that there exists a confidence gap between men and women at work and this can seep in the remote work sphere too. The truth is that remote work is not the cause of gender disparity and the gender wage gap, but rather it reflects the reality of the work culture of the countries and culture in question. Therefore, to address these issues companies that employ remote workers must ensure that there are certain policies eliminate bias, all while automating interviews and standardizing salaries.
